Order Up! Sequencing Made Simple

In this lesson, the students will practice sequencing daily activities, such as washing their hands, by arranging steps in the correct order.

This exercise progresses from previous lessons and helps students understand the logical flow of events, reinforcing the concept of sequencing, which is essential for coding and following instructions accurately.

    1 - Follow the Leader

Begin the "Follow the Leader" game by having all the students copy your actions exactly as you perform them. Stand at the front of the class and start with simple movements like touching your head, clapping your hands, or jumping in place. Encourage the students to follow along closely, mimicking your actions as they get used to the activity.

Once the students are comfortable with the game, select one or two students to take turns as the leader in front of the class. The rest of the students should continue to follow the leader’s actions exactly.

To introduce a further challenge, explain that the leader can specify different outcomes than the condition. For example, "If I jump, then you clap," or "If I spin in a circle, then you put your hands in the air." Use the teacher notes for additional examples to keep the game engaging.

    2 - Whiteboard Sequencing Activities

Start by explaining to the students that today they will be learning about sequencing. Ask them, "What do you think sequencing means?" After hearing their ideas, provide a simple definition: "Sequencing means putting things in the correct order."

Next, engage the students in the interactive games in the following steps.  Remember to encourage them to explain their reasoning when completing the sequence.

    Complete the following sequence activities.
