Evaluation and Iteration

In this lesson, you will evaluate your final artefact against the project brief, reflecting on its strengths, weaknesses, and effectiveness for forest management. Suggest and justify two to three improvements, then write a 300-word evaluation section. Add it to your report website and update the word count to stay under 2500 words.

    1 - Objectives

By the end of this lesson you will have:

    • A complete Evaluation section (approximately 300 words, worth 10 marks)
    • Evaluated your final artefact against the brief's requirements
    • Suggested at least two justified improvements or future iterations
    • Reflected on what worked well and what could be better
    • Added this section to your report website

Ensure your evaluation uses evidence from Testing (Section 5) to support claims, as per the brief's integrated approach.

2 - What the Brief Requires for Evaluation

From page 10 of the official brief:

“You should evaluate the final artefact that you designed and created. You should suggest, with justification, how your artefact could be improved or iterated upon in the future.”

This section must demonstrate critical reflection on how well the artefact addresses forest management challenges, using specific evidence.

This is worth 10 marks: 5 for evaluation, 5 for suggestions with justification.

3 - Evaluating Your Final Artefact

Answer these questions in your evaluation (150–200 words):

    • To what extent does it meet the brief's basic requirements (e.g., embedded system for data collection/simulation in forest contexts)?
    • To what extent does it meet the brief's advanced requirements (e.g., model, what-if scenarios, adaptive feedback)?
    • What strengths does it have (e.g., accurate data, useful predictions)?
    • What weaknesses or limitations (e.g., sensor accuracy, simple model)?
    • Overall, how effective is it for your chosen forest theme?

Use evidence like your test results.

4 - Suggesting Improvements with Justification

Suggest 2–3 specific iterations (100–150 words total). For each:

    ImprovementJustification
e.g., Add GPS moduleTo track exact forest locations, improving wildfire response accuracy
e.g., Use machine learning in modelFor better predictions from historical data, making it more adaptive to climate change
e.g., Solar power for hardwareTo allow long-term deployment in remote forests without batteries

Ensure each justification references a limitation identified in your evaluation or research (e.g., from Section 1).

5 - Writing the Full Evaluation Section

    For example (approx 300 words):

    5. Evaluation

My final artefact [briefly describe]. It meets the basic requirements by [evidence]. For advanced, the model [evidence]. Strengths include [2–3 points]. Limitations are [1–2 points]. Overall, it effectively addresses [theme] but could be more robust.

For improvements, first [idea 1] because [justification]. Second [idea 2] to [justification]. These iterations would make it more practical for real forest management.

[Include 1–2 screenshots or data visuals if under word limit, labelled for clarity].

Copy into your index.html under the Create section.
