    1 - Introduction

Welcome to the 'Unplugged Lessons 1st Class 2'. This lesson is designed to help students understand the concept of categorization and identification of outliers. The activities are interactive and engaging, aimed at enhancing the students' critical thinking skills. The lesson begins with a fun game of 'Word Tennis', followed by a 'What doesn't Belong' slideshow and worksheet. These activities will help students identify items that don't belong in a group, a fundamental concept in computer science and coding. Enjoy teaching!

    2 - Word Tennis

Introduce the game of Word Tennis.

Choose two students to come to the front and play a round of Word Tennis.

Start with a simple category, such as "fruits." The students should take turns naming fruits (e.g., apple, banana, orange) until one of them either repeats an item or can’t think of another fruit.

Play a few rounds with different categories to warm up the class and get them thinking about what items belong together.

See the Teacher Notes for a list of Categories to use for Word Tennis!

    3 - What doesn't Belong Slideshow

Display the following Slideshow on your IWB.

This slideshow shows pictures of groups of items . Each group will have one item that doesn’t belong.

Ask the students to identify the odd one out in each group and more importantly, can they explain why they don't belong!

Click the three dots along the bottom of the Slideshow for options to increase the size of the Slideshow or even write on the Slides!

    4 - What doesn't belong Worksheet

Download and distribute the 'What doesn't belong' worksheet.

The worksheet will have several groups of items, with one item in each group that doesn’t belong.

Tell the students that their job is to look at each group and circle the item that is the odd one out.

The worksheet includes a space for students to create their own "Odd One Out" exercise, which they can then use to challenge a partner or the teacher.

After the students have completed the worksheet, gather them together to review some of the questions.

    5 - Conclusion

Well done! This activity helps students to understand how to categorize things based on their characteristics and identify what doesn't belong in a group. This is a fundamental concept in computer science and coding.
